I can't think of a better way to start the season than with a win! DCB Adventures held their first event of the 2008 Dust Devil Championship @ Estrella Mountain and it was the perfect place for us to start this championship. Located right next to PIR where we normally race cars, we felt right at home on this singletrack.
I knew the key to running up front or even having a shot @ winning I would have to start up front and push the pace right from the beginning. I got to the starting line early and was ready to go fast right from the get go. As we made the first climb it was apparent that I either had to go or I was going to get eaten up by the other 40+ riders behind me, so I took the lead and set the pace for the first mile and half. As soon as we hit the sand I got passed by 3 riders and shortly after a 4th. As I settled into my pace I focussed on looking ahead and keeping on top of my hydration. Right before half way I was again overtaken by 5th place, but I was ready to change my race. As we headed up the highest climb of the race, I hit the after burner and passed two of the racers that had passed me, putting me back into 4th overall. The last portion of the race, I had the hammer down and was going as fast as I could passing 2 more competitors along the way. I finished 2nd overall and 1st in class. With 10 points in the bag and only 2 more events left I am looking to keep up my training to ensure the title goes to Mad Mountain Multisports! |
